Nebraska's Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education

Commission Remembers Dr. John Bernthal

The Coordinating Commission offers its deep condolences to the family of Dr. John Bernthal. Dr. Bernthal was appointed to the Coordinating Commission in 2014 by Governor Heineman, representing Nebraska Supreme Court Judicial District 1, which includes Lincoln. Dr. Bernthal had recently been elected vice chair of the Commission and had served on the Executive Committee and as chair of the Academic Programs Committee.

Gwenn Aspen of Omaha named new commission chair; Bernthal is vice chair

The Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education elected Gwenn Aspen its new chair at its May 20 meeting at Peru State College.  She will serve from July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022.  Ms. Aspen has served as on the Commission since 2016 as an at-large member.  She is the founder and president of Anequim, which provides a variety of services to property management companies that improve their efficiency and profitability. In 2006 Gwenn and her husband started Wistar Group, a property management company in which she remains a principal and serves on the board.

Annual Progress Report Assesses Nebraska College Going and Completion, Makes Recommendations

On March 11, the Coordinating Commission reviewed and approved the 2021 Nebraska Higher Education Progress Report, which includes a wide variety of comparative measures over the past decade to monitor and evaluate progress toward achieving three priorities for Nebraska's postsecondary education system:

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) eligibility temporarily expanded for college students in need.

Beginning January 16, 2021, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021, temporarily expands SNAP eligibility to allow students who either are eligible to participate in State or Federally financed work study during the regular academic year, as determined by the institution of higher education, or have an expected family contribution (EFC) of 0 in the current academic year.  Students who meet one of the two criteria may receive SNAP if they meet all other financial and non-financial SNAP eligibility criteria.
