The Coordinating Commission's executive director, Dr. Mike Baumgartner, testified before the Legislature's Education Committee on Sept. 10 at a hearing about college affordability.
The committee's chair, Sen. Kate Sullivan, asked Dr. Baumgartner to testify first and offer an overview of the issue in Nebraska, as well as make recommendations for ways to make college more affordable for Nebraska students.
The Legislature's Education Committee will hold a hearing on college affordability in room 1525 in the State Capitol. LB 519, passed and signed into law during the 2015 Legislative session, requires the committee to conduct an interim study on postsecondary affordablity issues. This hearing is intended to gather information for that study and its resulting report. The Coordinating Commission has been asked to testify, along with others representing postsecondary education in Nebraska.
The Coordinating Commission has created an interactive dashboard that provides estimates of college-going rates for each of Nebraska's public high schools from 2007 through 2014.
The Coordinating Commission will meet at Nebraska Wesyleyan University in Lincoln.
